Passenger car engine oils

PCMO · SAE 0W-20 to 10W-40

Part synthetic and fully synthetic engine oils for petrol and diesel engines to the current API and ACEA sequences.

Passenger car motor oil (PCMO) for the aftermarket, fleet operation and first fill. The current categories API SN Plus and SP include the LSPI test against pre-ignition in turbocharged engines with direct injection and are backward compatible with earlier API classes. Vehicles with a particulate filter and catalytic converter need Mid SAPS oils to ACEA C2/C3, because their limited sulphated ash does not clog the exhaust aftertreatment.

Commercial vehicle engine oils

Heavy duty diesel engine oils for long haul transport, construction and agricultural machinery.

Heavy duty diesel oil (HDDO) for engines with exhaust aftertreatment. API CK-4 is the current US category and replaces CJ-4 with improved oxidation and shear stability. Both are Low SAPS categories and therefore approved for particulate filters and SCR systems. The European ACEA E sequences are maintained in parallel and target extended oil drain intervals in long haul transport.

Gear oils

API GL-5 · SAE 75W-90, 80W-90, 85W-140

Axle and manual transmission oils with EP additives for high surface pressure.

API GL-5 is the category in active use for hypoid axles with high axle offset and contains up to 6.5 % EP additives against scuffing. API GL-4 is now mostly kept only as a compatibility statement for existing gearboxes, because there is hardly any test capacity left for new approvals. We check the current status of the category against the valid API publication before every offer.

Hydraulic oils

HLP · ISO VG 32 / 46 / 68

Mineral hydraulic fluids to DIN 51524-2 with wear, rust and oxidation protection.

The viscosity grade follows the operating temperature, not the size of the machine. VG 32 suits mobile hydraulics and cold starts, VG 46 is the standard for industrial hydraulics, VG 68 is used for high pressure systems and continuous operation above 60 °C. The HLP designation to DIN 51524 part 2 requires a mineral base oil with ZDDP antiwear protection plus rust, oxidation and foam inhibitors.

Industrial gear oils

Gear oils with EP additives for heavy duty gearboxes in cement, mining and plant engineering.

The CLP designation to ISO 6743-6 stands for industrial gear oils with ageing, corrosion and wear protection. The ISO VG grade is chosen according to peripheral speed and gear type; worm gears generally call for the higher viscosity grades.

Compressor oils

ISO 6743-3, family D

Lubricants for air, gas and refrigeration compressors on mineral, PAO or ester base.

The choice of base oil follows the compression temperature and the compressed medium. PAO and ester products withstand higher discharge temperatures and extend service life considerably compared with mineral oils; esters are also miscible with certain refrigerants.

Turbine oils

ISO 8068, family T

Oils for steam, gas and water turbines and combined cycle plants.

ISO 8068 classifies turbine oils by turbine type and base oil type. Synthetic esters and PAO are used in gas turbines running at high temperature, phosphate esters where fire risk is a concern. In operation, oxidation stability, air release and water separation decide.

Heat transfer oils

ISO 6743, family Q

Thermal oils for closed process heating circuits.

Heat transfer oils carry process heat at high temperatures without pressure and so replace steam systems. What matters is thermal stability, low cracking tendency and a boiling behaviour that prevents vapour bubbles in the circuit.

Metalworking fluids

water miscible and neat

Cutting fluids for machining, forming and grinding.

Water miscible products are made up as an emulsion, microemulsion or fully synthetic fluid and cool more strongly. Neat cutting oils lubricate better and are used for high surface pressures and fine machining. The choice decides tool life and surface finish.

Greases

NLGI 000 to 6 · lithium and lithium complex

Multipurpose and high temperature greases for rolling bearings, wheel bearings and industrial applications.

The NLGI grade describes consistency, not load capacity. NLGI 2 is the most widely used multipurpose grade. The thickener determines the field of use. Lithium complex greases reach dropping points of 260 to 280 °C and can be used continuously up to roughly 150 to 170 °C, with high shear stability at the same time.

Marine oils

Cylinder oil BN 24 to 100 · TPEO BN 10 to 55

Cylinder and system oils for two stroke crosshead engines and four stroke trunk piston engines.

The base number is matched to the sulphur content of the fuel in use. The lower the sulphur, the lower the BN required, since excess alkaline reserve leads to deposits. Since the IMO sulphur limit of 0.50 %, lower BN levels are the norm in regular operation, and high BN levels are kept for ships with scrubbers. The engine manufacturer sets the binding assignment.
